Walking & Trekking Accessories
Feet
The most important area for an enjoyable and successful walk or trek are the feet.Your boots must fit well, use volume adjusters to even out different size feet. Use shock absorbing insoles to protect your shins and knees, wear a decent pair of loop stitch socks to help prevent blisters and cold feet. If you do feel a blister start, treat immediately - Compeed used correctly is brilliant. Alternatively protect vulnerable areas of your feet with zinc oxide tape before you set off.
Protective Clothing
You need to have the ability to stay warm and dry and to be able to stay cool if it gets hot. 4 layers usually does the trick - base layer, shirt, warm & lightweight mid layer and finally a waterproof and windproof shell. You will undoutedly find yourself taking clothes off and putting clothes on, the aim: to keep your temperature as constant as possible. A long sleeved shirt is great as a single layer if you get very hot as it gives sun protection and a barrier to biting insects too. Don't forget to wear a sun hat in sunny conditions, it really does help you avoid heat exhaustion.
Walking Poles
Walking poles are not to be underestimated. They are invaluable to prevent slipping and a great assistance going up and down steep hills. If you have bad knees or hips, use two sprung poles - you will be amazed at how much further you can go without problems.
Drinking
Take regular sips of water to keep those muscles hydrated. In very hot climates consider drinking a rehydration solution before you leave and at the end of the day and always carry sachets of rehydration powders with you. Even in cold climates its easy to become dehydrated if you don't drink enough. A water chamber with drinking straw gives quick and easy access while on the move
