About Worldwide Diarrhoea Kit
What is the Worldwide Diarrhoea Kit?
It’s a compact travel pack built to help you deal quickly with travellers’ diarrhoea, one of the most common complaints people pick up abroad. It pairs effective symptom relief with a prescription antibiotic for more serious cases, giving you a dependable way to manage an upset stomach when a pharmacy or doctor isn’t close to hand.
Who Is This Kit For?
This kit is well suited to:
- Travellers heading to places where food and water standards can’t always be relied upon
- Business travellers who can’t afford to lose working days to illness
- Anyone venturing off the beaten track or into areas where medical help is limited
- Travellers who want to be more self-reliant while away
What does the kit include?
The kit includes a carefully chosen selection of treatments:
- Azithromycin 500mg tablets (x3): a prescription-only antibiotic for use in certain cases of bacterial diarrhoea, when clinically advised
- Loperamide 2mg capsules (x10): to help bring diarrhoea symptoms under control
- Oral rehydration sachets (x6): to replenish lost fluids and guard against dehydration
- Rehydration spoon: for accurate, fuss-free preparation
How to Use the Medicines in the Kit
Azithromycin Tablets – Oral Antibiotic
This antibiotic is highly effective against most causes of travellers’ diarrhoea and should significantly reduce both how severe it is and how long it lasts.
Dose: Take ONE tablet once a day for 3 days as required, alongside one or two Loperamide capsules (see below).
Side effects: Most commonly diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, and flatulence.
Notes: Seek medical help if your symptoms haven’t improved after 72 hours, or if you develop a fever or notice blood or mucus in your stools. For further guidance, see the ‘Food and Water’ sections on the NaTHNaC website at http://travelhealthpro.org.uk/factsheet/44/food-and-water-hygiene, along with the information leaflets included in the kit.
Loperamide Capsules
This works as a ‘blocker’ to manage diarrhoea. It won’t treat the diarrhoea itself, but it helps slow it down.
Dosage: Take two tablets together to begin, then one more as needed, up to a maximum of 6 in any 24-hour period.
Notes: Never exceed the recommended dose and be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Do not use if there is blood in your stools. For further direction, read the Nomad ‘Diarrhoea Self Treatment Advice’ sheet.
