Even well seasoned travellers can occasionally find themselves having to make a mad dash through the airport but it doesn’t need to be this way! Follow our tips and you’ll get through the airport in a breeze every time.

Do Your Research

Do your research and find out the recommended arrival time pre-flight for your departure airport and airline. Some airports have long line for check-in and security and can suggest arriving up to 4 hours before a long-haul flight. Find out in advance so you’re not left having to make a mad dash for your flight.

Get your paperwork in order

Opt to use digital tickets and boarding passes wherever possible and take screenshots of them all so they’re right there on your phone without having to open a special app, alongside your passport. Many airlines utilise digital passes that can be added to your smartphone ticket wallet. Opt to have them displayed on your lock screen prior to travel and you’re just a swipe away having your pass scanned! For any paper items you might need to enter your destination, such as vaccination certificates, keep them in your hand luggage in a waterproof wallet so they’re close to hand when you land.

Invest in Fast Track Access

Check out fast track passes at your departure airport, especially if you’re travelling at peak times. We’ve known fast track passes at Heathrow to be as cheap as £10, and as little as £5 at other UK airports. Not bad considering you get access to a dedicated line at security with no long queues, saving you precious time and giving you a more relaxing airport security experience. Worth it if you’ve got the room in your travel budget.

Plan your travel outfit

For long haul flights especially, you’ll want to get cosy to combat the air con and wear something you can sleep in comfortably. Wearing layers that can easily be removed will help you get through security quickly. Don’t bother with a belt and unnecessary jewellery, you’ll only have to take them all off the get through security and if you forget to remove any you might find yourself needing further checks like a body x-ray.

Pack Properly

Apart from your phone and your travel documents, you’re not going to be dipping in and out of your carry on until you’re on the plane. Pack with this in mind and use the most accessible pockets to store your travel documents so you’re not rummaging at every check point.

Remember to avoid packing any restricted items in your hand luggage such as liquids over 100ml, sharp items like scissors, matches or more than one lighter. Any liquids, gels, creams etc. need to be under 100mls and packed in individual clear plastic bags. You can get these at the airport, or pack these items in clear bags in advance to save you a bit of time at security.

Your laptop and other electricals may need to be scanned separately, make sure they’re easily removed from your carry-on without having to empty everything out of your bag.

Wherever you go on your next travel trip, make sure you book a travel health consultation 6-8 weeks before you leave. You’ll see an expert travel nurse who will advise on any vaccinations, malaria tablets and medical kits you might need along with any other health & safety issues you should be aware of based on your itinerary and medical history.
